Staying Safe As You Age

As you grow older, even a safe and happy home can pose a health risk, if the necessary precautions arent put in place as you age. Losing your ability to protect yourself is a natural part of the aging process, as eyesight, hearing, strength and balance arent what they once were in your youth. A fall that might result in little more than a bruise for a young man or woman can have serious consequences for senior citizens. With the proper preparation, you can mitigate risk, particularly for those who plan on living on their own, well beyond their prime.
- Bathrooms can be hazardous, as slick surfaces can be slippery when wet. Make sure your bathtub and shower has a handle or grab bar within reach, in order to ensure a safe entry and exit.
- Don’t let lightbulbs go unchanged. A mere inconvenience to homeowners of less advanced age, lighting becomes critical as vision deteriorates. It goes without saying that stair cases and drop offs should be well lit at all times, but items on the floor in any room can pose a more subtle risk, so it’s best to check lightbulbs regularly.
- Test home alarms and smoke detectors. While all homeowners should monitor the effectiveness of their emergency alert systems, as your hearing and instinctive awareness diminishes, a loud, high decibel alarm can send a timely warning to occupants of all ages.
