Public Transportation Safety Tips

For urban residents, public transportation, whether bus, subway or light rail, is a popular, low-cost way to see the city. However, though convenient, public transportation has inherent risks, sending passengers far away from their safe and secure homes.  The following tips will help to ensure you return with both your person and possessions intact:

Keep Your Possessions in Sight – Don’t put a bag full of valuables below your seat or in a seat outside your natural eye-line.  Especially if you plan on taking a nap or resting your eyes, make sure all your valuables are on your person.

Choose a moderately filled train car – Cars that are too full run the risk of pickpockets, whereas cars that are completely empty makes you a target for ill-intentioned characters, were one to board at the next stop.

Sit Near the Front – Shady activities are less likely to occur within plain view of an authority figure.  Close proximity to a bus driver or conductor lessens the likelihood you will run into any disturbances.

Don’t Flash Cash – Whether literal dollar bills or flashy jewelry, it’s best try to tone down any aura of perceived wealth.  Blending into the crowd makes you a less likely target to someone looking for a quick buck.

Know Where You’re Going – Getting off at the wrong stop could put you in an unfamiliar part of town, potentially a dangerous one.  Look at a map while onboard and pay attention as each stop is announced.

Travel in Pairs if Possible – The buddy system is always a great idea, when navigating new areas.  Not only does it serve as a deterrent against would-be wrong-doers, but an extra set of eyes never hurts when trying to get from point A to point B.
