Is a Dog Right For You?

Dogs are mans best friend. However, not all people are dog people, plain and simple. Though a dog can go a long way towards serving as a deterrent for would-be break-ins, its important not to overlook more important considerations before making your way to the pet adoption agency or breeder.

Is anyone in your family allergic? – Your home is ultimately supposed to be a comfortable place to call home.  But constant allergies or injections aren’t likely to promote an at-ease atmosphere, home alarm systems, and other more dependable safety precautions, come without pain, and don’t necessarily need to be augmented by four-legged companion.

Do you have it in the budget? – Adoption fees are far from nominal, though pale in comparison to breeder costs.  Not to mention, some families forget that pets are more than an upfront cost.  Food and vet bills add up over time and can have a larger impact than planned for on family finances.  Not to mention, boarding costs  when out of town.

Are you responsible and do you have the time? – A dog needs to be looked after with regularity, from walking and exercise to grooming and hygiene, not just for appearances sake but for its health.

A dog may be a great investment, both as a home security endeavor and addition to the family, but it’s not a decision to be taken lightly.  Don’t purchase a dog on a whim, just because you’re scared.  Think through taking in any pet carefully, and take time to weigh the pros and cons.
